Inventory products by function
Sort products by what they do rather than by brand. Common groups include cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, treatment, exfoliant, hydrating serum, eye product, and mask.
- Check labels for directions and warnings.
- Set aside expired products or anything with a changed smell, color, or texture.
- Notice products with overlapping active ingredients before combining them.
Build the simplest base routine
A basic morning can be moisturizer followed by broad-spectrum sunscreen. A basic evening can be cleanser followed by moisturizer. Your needs may differ, but a stable base makes it easier to understand the effect of any treatment you add.
- Morning: cleanse if needed, moisturize, then apply sunscreen as directed.
- Evening: remove makeup and sunscreen, cleanse, then moisturize.
- Follow product instructions and seek professional advice for prescriptions, persistent irritation, or skin conditions.
Introduce one change at a time
Adding several treatments at once makes it difficult to know what helped or caused irritation. Introduce one product, use it according to its label, and record how your skin responds over time.
- Note the date you began using it.
- Record frequency instead of relying on memory.
- Pause use if irritation occurs and follow the product's safety instructions.
- Do not treat a reaction as proof that a product is working.
Review before you repurchase
When a product runs out, ask whether you used it consistently, enjoyed using it, noticed a meaningful benefit, and would choose it over similar products you own. An empty bottle is useful evidence, but it does not automatically make the product a favorite.
